YOU BETTER ADJUST YOUR ATTITUDE!
This is a common phrase we hear growing up as kids.
And one that doesn't generally come with an instruction manual.
I spent 20 years in the Navy and there was a manual and instructions for everything.
There were instructions posted directly above the toilet.
I. Am. Dead. Serious.
You can look it up on Google if you want.
Anyways, back to the attitude adjusting.
So there you are as a small child and you are upset, sad or angry and there is (insert adult from your past) telling you to "stop crying or they will give you something to cry about".
I laugh at this now, yet it's really not that funny.
I bet if you let the rolodex of your mind just flip to all the times someone told you that your emotions were wrong it would flip until the end of time.
Orders without instructions.
Makes zero sense.
So now fast forward 10, 15, 20, 25...1000 years and all these emotional contradictions are hard wired into us.
Don't be a baby.
Be a man.
Big girls don't cry.
You don't need a man in your life.
Grow a pair.
Don't throw like a girl.
Our practice with lifting people up is...well...out of practice.
Pushing away when we could be embracing.
Putting things in the dark instead of illuminating.
Giving orders instead of instructions.
I started this with the intention of writing about how attitude affects everyday life.
Truth is of course it does, however even more important is that your attitude affects the life and behaviors of those who are watching and learning from you.
If you have children, younger siblings, nieces, nephews or merely just a person who lives on this planet everything you do is being watched by someone else who is member of the next generation.
There is a lot of flack going around about Millennials and how they are....whatever it is they are.
Yet, they were raised by everyone else that came before them.
We are all products of our environment.
We have all learned from those that came before us.
You weren't born with your bad habits.
You didn't come equipped with emotional issues.
IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT THAT YOU ARE KIND OF MESSED UP.
Wait for it.
IT IS YOUR FAULT IF YOU STAY THAT WAY.
Do yourself and everyone else a favor and take the first step in breaking a bad habit today.
Whether it be biting your fingernails, trolling people on the internet, or literally showing up at a rally that supports blind hate and aggression.
Practice some kindness.
You are not your habits.
You can change.
You can learn something different.
You can replace Fear with Love.
The first step is simple.
Find the instructions.
Someone somewhere has already figured it out.
Whatever it is, you can Google it.
